“I AM [the Way]”
John 14:1-14_
[Discussion starter] Who do you want to be around when you’re hurting or distressed?
How does that person (those people) bring comfort to you?
Jesus’ followers felt like their world was falling apart. Jesus had just told them that he was leaving and they couldn’t come with him. The path to the cross was for Jesus alone. In the backwash of their sorrow and distress, Jesus speaks words of peace – and makes an astonishing claim!
[Read John 14:1-14]
Think about times of stress and sorrow in your life, and then consider what the disciples were feeling. What is it like to have a “troubled” heart?
What will Jesus be doing when he leaves his disciples (verses 2-4)?
In what ways is Jesus preparing you to be with him in the Father’s house?
In verse 5, what does Thomas’ question tell you about what was troubling his heart?
How is Jesus’ claim to be “the way and the truth and the life” received in our society?
How would you answer the person who thinks it is narrow and intolerant to believe that Jesus is the only way to God?
[Activity] Put Jesus’ response to Philip’s question in your own words (verses 9-10).
What is Jesus saying about who he is?
In what ways did the disciples (or even Christians today) do “greater things” than what Jesus did (verse 12)?
Is verse 13 a “blank cheque” to get anything we want from God?
Explain your answer.
What can you learn from this passage that will help you to “stop having a troubled heart”?
